The Influence of Media on the Popularization
of Ballroom Choreography in Ukraine (Mid to Late-1990s – Early 2020s)

Abstract

The article is aimed at analyzing the trends in the popularization of ballroom choreography in Ukraine in the 1990s to the early 2020s) through the lens of the specifics of ballroom dance’s existence in the media space. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivity, historicism, systematics, multifactoriality and comprehensiveness. Scientific novelty: an art history analysis of the media influence on the popularization of ballroom choreography in Ukraine (from the second half of the 1990s to the early 2020s) has been conducted for the first time. Conclusions: It should be noted summarizing that the popularization of ballroom choreography in Ukraine generally follows the overall trends in the development of mass media culture. An active development of commercial ballroom choreography, including the creation of special dance performances for the film industry, advertising, fashion shows, music videos, video formats, and various television programs, mostly in the reality-show format, can be stated. These phenomena are complemented by the growing popularity of ballroom events, such as charity balls and historical reenactments of ballroom culture. Thus, the expansion of the media space and the practical application of ballroom choreography assist the transformation of ballroom dance into a significant socio-cultural phenomenon.
