Ukrainian Literary Critics in the Documentaries
and “Cinematic Monographs” by Professor Ihor Kozlyk

Abstract

The article considers documentary biographical films and so-called cinematic monographs by Ihor Kozlyk, dedicated to well-known literary scholars, teachers and friends of the author, with whom he communicated and collaborated for decades. These include the film Mark Teplinsky – Teacher, Scholar, Man (2012), its sequel Mark Teplinsky and Vladimir Matviishin (2013), as well as Academician Dmytro Nalyvaiko (2016), Natalia Kavetska-Mazepa (2021). The text series of these films formed the basis for the monographs Mark Teplinsky: ‘Do as you should...’ Confession through the Eyes of Another (2021, based on the first two films), ‘Academician Dmytro Nalyvaiko. Confession Against the Backdrop of Outside Views’ (2024), ’Natalia Kavetska-Mazepa‘ (2024). I. Kozlyk is a Doctor of Philology, professor, and head of the Department of Foreign Literature and Comparative Studies at the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (PNU). He is the author of works on the theory and history of literature and comparative studies. Although not a professional filmmaker, he became a screenwriter, director, cinematographer and editor of his own films. Their heroes are Mark Teplinsky, professor, head of the department at PNU (later headed by I. Kozlyk), author of works on the history of literature and pedagogy; Dmytro Nalyvaiko, founder of comparative literature in Ukraine, head of the department at the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, a prominent specialist in the history of Western European literature, the problems of Romanticism, and comparative literature as his main field of activity; Natalia Kavetska-Mazepa, an employee of the same institute, researcher of 19th–20th century poetry and international literary relations.

In his films and books, I. Kozlyk traces the life and creative path of these extraordinary personalities, using his interviews with them, as well as the testimonies of their relatives and colleagues, including authoritative fellow philologists (M. Zhulynsky, M. Sulyma, P. Mykhed, V. Skurativsky, O. Hlotov and others), well-known poets (D. Pavlychko, I. Drach). The author generously illustrates his films and books with archival materials (videos, photographs, documents). The films and monographs complement each other, creating vivid and multifaceted images of talented scholars who have made a valuable contribution to the history of Ukrainian science.
