Scientific Centre of Yurii Boiko-Blokhyn: Reflections on the Semiosphere of the City of Pereiaslav
Abstract
The semiosphere of the city of Pereyaslav, Kyiv Region, is shaped by the cultural information continuously generated by its system of city museums. Today, the museum complex comprises 24 institutions that belong to the National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve “Pereyaslav.” In the semiotic aspect, the functioning of this museum complex embodies the meta-concept of a “city-museum” and demonstrates the high cultural significance of the “museum” concept within the regional semiosphere.
A personalized cultural phenomenon is represented by the activity of the Yuriy Boyko-Blokhin Scientific Center at Hryhoriy Skovoroda University in Pereyaslav. The extensive body of archival materials preserved there is regarded as an essential component of the semiotic space of regional museum culture. This space has been formed through the scientific, creative, and personal communication across different historical periods within the family of Yuriy and Daryna Boyko-Blokhin, reflecting the transcultural idea of “Ukraine in the world”.
The article also examines the artistic dimension of Yuriy Boyko-Blokhin’s life and scholarly work. Throughout his life, he maintained a deep interest in Ukrainian drama and its interrelations with literary scholarship. His love for music and singing originated in childhood. His musical interests are further illustrated by issues of the periodical “Visti” (“Herald”), dedicated to musical and artistic life, and by P. Matsenko’s study “Dmytro Stepanovych Bortnyanskyi and Maksym Sozontovych Berezovskyi,” containing the author’s personal inscription – both preserved in the Center’s collection.
Intertextuality, as an important element of the city’s semiosphere, is manifested through the active public work of Daryna Boyko-Blokhin, president of the German-Ukrainian Scientific Association named after Prof. Yuriy Boyko-Blokhin.
The conducted research reveals a tendency toward the consolidation of the semiotic space of Pereyaslav’s regional museum culture, stimulated by the emergence of new cultural artifacts. The Yuriy Boyko-Blokhin Scientific Center of Hryhoriy Skovoroda University in Pereyaslav enriches the city’s semiosphere by activating its key elements – cultural memory, communication, landscape texts, infosphere, and intertextuality – as new symbolic systems that expand the semiotic space of the region’s museum culture. The Center’s activities positively influence the educational process both within and beyond the University, contributing to the formation of young people’s modern understanding of Ukraine, the continuity of its national cultural tradition, and the paradigm of its European integration development.
